It is not so far away to the 2012 London Olympics. I have, as time permits, been watching the Beijing Olympics and with much interest in certain sports. The two most notable are the swimming and men’s running sprints. I think my interest stems from being a swimmer (when I was a lot younger) but also wanting to see who are the fastest on land and in the water. I think it is important to remember that the athletes taking part are the fastest people alive on our planet. Amazing!!!
When you look at Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt they are not much different to any of the other athletes that entered those same races. The difference is the way they think - the belief they have in their own ability. I know, nowadays, that most good athletes have mentors, as well as coaches, to help them. I often wonder if we in the UK have missed a trick here. We do not encourage school sports enough. Children often have to join private clubs - quite expensive - and a lot cannot afford this. I think there is some unbelievable talent going to waste. We need to be cultivating our talent to the fullest extent. We have 4 years to the 2012 London Olympics and our sports people deserve the same chances as every other country. If the nation gets behind them, we can have a Michael Phelps or Usain Bolt just waiting to claim their rightful place in the history books.
