There is a very big difference between imagination and visualisation. Imagination is the creation of ideas in your mind. Visualisation is the recall of things already experienced
All visualisation can do is recall all the past experiences you have had. If they have been negative (where you have lost a race or an event) then that is what you are constantly replaying in your mind.
Think back to childhood. Did you use your imagination and pretend to be Superman/woman ? You were actually Superman/woman in your mind, and you believed you could fly. I watch my Granddaughter play with her dolls. At 4 years of age, they are real little people to her. She talks to them, and in her mind, they answer her. As we get older, we realise this is our imagination - and we learn that its not a good thing to live in fairyland. How sad that we are never taught to use our imaginations correctly. The subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between something that is real, and something that is vividly imagined. That is the reason why, when we have nightmares, we have to remind ourselves that it was only a dream. While it was happening it was absolutely real.
We can use our imaginations to see ourselves winning race after race. You might not know it, but the guy who was a master at imagination and visualisation is Arnold Schwarzenegger. He won all of his competitions in bodybuilding in his mind, long before he entered the bodybuilding contests. Once we have these vivid pictures in our mind of winning races, it is then easy to recall them any time they are needed with visualisation. To the person visualising him/herself winning, the imaginings would be absolutely real, as if they had actually experienced them.
You would be seen by others as a person with absolute self-confidence in your ability to win. The mind is that powerful that what you think about, you bring about. If the pictures are crystal clear in your mind, and you believe and see yourself winning medals at the 2012 London Olympics, then the chances are, you probably will. The absolute worst that can happen is you will beat you best previous performance. That in itself is a winner !
